12 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching The Walking Dead
7. Inside Jokes
We all remember who Carl Grimes used to be. He was annoying, obnoxious, whiny and unlikable. Of course, this didn't last, because by Season Three innocent little Carl had become something of a post-apocalyptic veteran. He became hardened, tough and a real fighter. The kid he once was was long gone by this point, and his journey into being a strong adolescent warrior began.
But there was a time when he was just a kid, who liked kid things and wore kid clothes. One prime example is the T-shirt he is wearing during Season One, which had a emblem on it from Robert Kirkman's comic book series, "Invicible". That's right - in The Walking Dead, Kirkman and his other projects exist, and Carl is a fan. It can be easily missed if you're not familiar with Kirkman's other work, but once you realise the reference you can't help but chuckle and grin.
It's not the only Kirkman reference in the series, however. In Season Five, Carl meets a group of kids in Alexandria who are reading a book called "Wolf Fight". Not only is this a reference to the coming threat of the Wolves, but it is also a subtle nod to Kirkman's comic series, "The Astounding Wolf-Man." And when he meets Enid, Carl finds her reading an "Invincible" comic.
That is some meta TV, and a nice respectful nod to the creator of the comics.
