12 Stupidest Decisions By Star Trek Characters

8. Spock Versus The Creature; Obsession

Star Trek Picard
Paramount

Magnificent in its simplicity, Obsession was an episode fraught with behind the scenes rewrites and hurried completion as one of two episodes added late into Star Trek's second season.

But that's not an excuse to let one of Trek's most beloved characters performing one of the most idiotic moves of all time.

The creature we encounter in this episode is a gaseous cloud. It floats around, wafts in the air and then kills. It has no solid form and as such poses a very real, imminent threat. Kirk's decision to pursue the creature over delivering medical supplies is perhaps not sound but does make for a good bit of excitement.

However, Spock goes all out of character at one point and throws everything logical out of the airlock in one jaw-dropper of a moment. Ensign of the Week Garrovick manages to throw a tantrum and knock the vent in his quarters to open allowing the gaseous creature access to the ship.

One; who is silly enough to design a ship with that kind of ducting that space can seep in? Two; Spock's solution to stopping the gas cloud which drains blood from its victims? Put his hands over the grate as much as possible. That should stop it.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
