Despite playing the pristinely shaven Don Draper on television, Hamm's often spotted between filming sporting facial hair that varies from aftershave-spokesman stubble to bloke-who-lives-under-a-bridge beard. It's not so much that it's a preference for him though, more that it's near impossible for Hamm to keep on top of the frankly startling pace of his growth. Despite shaving completely the morning of filming on Mad Men, he's required to go back to the basin after lunch and do it again, and a third time if filming extends past the early evening. Mad Men's make-up director revealed in an interview that most of the other facial hair on the show is prosthetic, but that she faces a constant running battle with nature to keep Hamm's cheeks and chin smooth.
