12 Times The Simpsons Went Dark
3. Moe's Attempted Suicide
Springfield's cankerous bar owner has always been known as the local sad sack. He often makes passing remarks that he's battling depression due to his less than appealing looks and extreme loneliness.
He often makes remarks about wanting to commit suicide which is usually played off for laughs. That, in itself, is dark enough but it all comes full circle in the episode, "Whiskey Business." In literally the first few minutes of the episode, Moe decides to go through with his suicidal tendencies.
He tries to hang himself in the storage room of his tavern but fails due to the roof collapsing from his weight. He reveals that he simply has little to live for and sees no reason to keep going. His friends decide to help him get a new outlook on life by taking him to Capitol City with some new clothes and experiences. So, it'd be nice if the episode ended there, right?
Not exactly. See, he does earn a grander look at his reality, eventually remodeling his tavern to attract a higher class of patrons. However, after a few bad investments and losing his new suit, his tavern reverts back to its old, scummy self. While the episode ends with Moe keeping his new outlook on life, how long can that really last?
With another failure under his belt, it seems only logical he'll eventually return to his self-loathing ways.
