12 Times The Simpsons Went Dark

2. Homer's Odyssey

Simpsons Dark Moe
20th Television

If you thought Moe's attempted suicide was dark, wait until you hear about Homer's.

What? You don't remember that Homer once tried to kill himself during the series? That's actually fair because, with its cheap animation and lower grade voice acting, a lot of fans rarely revisit the first season. But, surprisingly, the first season contains one of the darkest moments in the entire series.

After he loses his job, he immediately tries find new employment with no success. He begins to fall into a deep depression that Marge and the kids are unable to break him out of. Then, without prompt or warning, Homer gets up in the middle of the night, says goodbye to his family and goes out to jump off a bridge.

What makes this moment even more f*cked up is that he plans to drown himself by weighing himself down with a large boulder. On his way to the bridge, he passes by an elderly couple that openly mocks the fact that he's going to kill himself. Going as far as laughing maniacally at him as he walks by.

Obviously, he doesn't go through with it but looking back at how these tough subjects were handled 30 years ago, it's rather shocking.
