12 TV Deaths You Knew Were Coming (That Still Broke You)

11. William Hill - This Is Us

Jon Snow Death
NBC

A complex character that is thrown from one thing to another whilst always giving off the impression that there is a genuinely kind soul underneath it all, William is a former drug addict and estranged father to Randall in This Is Us.

A truly wholesome character that is struggling to pick up the pieces of his former life by turning things around, William is shown to be a loving paternal figure towards Randall and their relationship does improve and develop into much more of a father-son bond by the time William's run comes to an end.

Already introduced as a terminal stage-four cancer patient, William's health is frequently mentioned to the audience, and he expresses doubts about continuing on with his chemotherapy to Randall in the show's eleventh episode.

Seeing William succumb to his illness whilst with Randall on a road trip to his hometown of Memphis is sad enough on its own, however the letters that he leaves to Randall's daughters asking them to plan a fun memorial for him, and to Beth saying how she is the daughter he never had makes for some truly heartbreaking stuff.
