12 TV Shows That Don't Live Up To Great Premises

10. True Blood

The vampire boom of the late ‘00s already seems a little quaint, but at the time, no horror creature was hotter than the nightwalker. For a while, True Blood had perhaps the most enjoyable and downright fun take on the genre, a swampy, sexy show in which vampires lived openly in our world (though not without opposition). It had a great cast and a daring vibe, cultivated by the ever-envelope pushing showrunner Alan Ball.

It fell into the same trap as many fantasy properties, however: they weren’t happy with just vampires. As the seasons ticked on, True Blood added werewolves, witches, fairies, and just about every other creature from popular mythology to their ranks.

The real decline of the show came with the departure of Alan Ball, following which the once-lucrative series limped to a disappointing conclusion. Like other shows based on popular books, the drop off also coincided with the writers running out of source material on which to base their show. True Blood had all the potential for a beloved cult hit, but it badly overstayed its welcome.
