12 TV Shows You Didn't Know Were Linked
3. Orange Is The New Black And Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Netflix has a decent sense of humour when it comes to its original programmes, which can easily be seen in this unexpected connection. These shows may be utterly contrasting regarding their narratives, but there is a scene in season three of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (UKS) that places them in the same world.
The events of UKS come after our eponymous heroine is released from an underground bunker where she has spent her life as part of a cult. Alongside her are a collection of other women, one of which is named Gretchen. While freedom is massively appealing for Kimmy, Gretchen has trouble adjusting to life without cult-intervention, and as such, she attempts to create her own.
In the third season's episode Kimmy Steps on a Crack!, Gretchen ends up getting arrested after unsuccessfully trying to generate her own cult. She is then transported to a very familiar-looking prison, where she meets Black Cindy from Orange is the New Black.
The moment you realise that Gretchen has ended up in Litchfield could have come across as cheap, but the gag works well, and is topped off by the appearance of one of the prison show's most popular characters.
