6. Garth Fitzgerald IV
Location: Off the Grid
First Appearance: Season 7, Episode 8 "Season 7, Time for A Wedding"
Played by: D.J. Qualls Mentioned a whole season before he initially appeared, Garth is an unconventional, mostly mocked hunter who definitely marches to the beat of his own drummer. Unlike some of the fringe nutcases we have seen over the years, Garth's eccentricity is largely amusing and effective in its own right. He was originally an aspiring dentist when he had his first case, wherein he vanquished the Tooth Fairy. One of his most frequent collaborators is his sock puppet, Mr. Fizzles, which he uses when interviewing young children. Qualls' wiry frame and Ichabod Crane features add to Garth's welcome awkwardness, which contrasts nicely against the stoic, brow-furrowed Winchester aesthetic. When Bobby died, Garth took over his role as consultant and resource for the Hunters. In addition to wearing one of Singer's old hats, he also added "Idjit" and "Balls!" to his vocabulary. Mentioned more than he's seen, Garth has become a staple of this universe over the past year or so, and it's unlikely we'll seem him disappear from it anytime soon. However, with hints that Bobby might return--although actor Jim Beaver says "Whatever you think it is...it ain't"-- Garth's new gig as the Help Desk might be short lived, thus freeing him up to go elsewhere. Personally, I'd love to see Garth as part of a larger ensemble where Qualls could really establish the character as more than a joke. It's reasonable to think that a new show would attempt to replicate a character like this, so why go for an imitation, when you can have the real thing? If you've got to choose one sillier side character, I'm thinking it really should be Garth. Mr. Fizzles could come along too. Since he's often awkward in the field, but good with a book or two, he's an excellent candidate for taking over the Men of Letters gig.
