2. Tony Soprano - The Sopranos

The Sopranos Tony Soprano death ending
HBO

Much like Walt, it was hard not to root for Tony Soprano over the course of the show even though he commits a number of reprehensible acts, such as consistently cheating on his wife Carmella, killing his own cousin, Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi), snuffing out his old buddy Chris after a brutal car crash, and of course, who can forget his extremely uncomfortable relationship with his mother, even if she was a callous b****? On the other hand, he did kill and dismember arguably the series' biggest douche, Ralph Cifaretto, so he's not all bad...

Though Tony took care of rival Phil Leotardo in the series finale, his ambiguous fate meant bad things either way. Some will argue that the sudden cut to black implied he was shot to death while he sat in the restaurant with his family, reflecting a conversation he had with Bobby Baccalieri earlier on in the season ("You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?"). Others believe that Tony is still alive, though he will essentially live a life of fear, constantly looking over his shoulder for that night when someone might finally pop him in revenge.

Either way, Tony is confined to a relatively grim fate, which befits the countless murders and other acts he's either personally committed or ordered, as much as we love the guy.
