You don't make it to almost 30 years on TV and over 600 episodes without a few tears, and The Simpsons, in its prime at least, knew how to tug at the heartstrings, from Lisa's Substitute to Homer's farewell to his mother.

The most heartwrenching begins with a simple question: Why are there no photos of Maggie in the Simpson house?

From there we get the story of Homer taking his dream job at the bowling alley, only do discover Marge is pregnant for the third time and that they can't support the new baby on his wage. He's forced to go crawling back to the Power Plant, and gets his job back on the condition of a sign in his cubicle, which reads 'Don't forget you're here forever'.

Gradually he covers it with photos of Maggie, until it simply reads 'Do it for her'. Homer isn't going to win any father-of-the-year prizes, but it's a heartwarming, tearjerking reminder of how much he really cares for his family underneath the buffoonery and strangulation.
