13 Reasons Why 13 Reasons Why's Final Season Is A Complete Trainwreck
9. Clay
The seventh episode of season three was called 'There Are a Number of Problems with Clay Jensen'. That's an understatement.
Clay is not a good protagonist. He was very good in season one but in season two he became a selfish jerk who treated most of the other characters like garbage and this has continued ever since. He also has a disturbingly possessive and jealous attitude towards both Hannah and Ani at times.
He's a tiny bit better in season four, but not by much. He's still snarky and unlikable much of the time, especially when he attacked Ani for writing his college application essay and trying to help him, and his mental health battles were a poorly-written story-line too.
All of these internal battles Clay was facing never flowed in an organic way and he kept jumping from being OK to having another meltdown. It was very satisfying to see him recover at the end, but it's a huge shame the rest of the arc was so badly done.
Dylan Minnette is great (and Gary Sinise was also excellent as Clay's therapist) but even he isn't enough to make Clay work.
