13 Reasons Why Review: 10 Ups & 9 Downs From ALL 4 Seasons
8. Not Enough Hannah
The lack of Hannah Baker in the show was a constant criticism of the second, third and fourth seasons (mainly because the latter two moved on from her story), but the first season could have done with a little more of her too.
Before you say anything, this writer is well-aware of the fact that Katherine Langford's heartbroken protagonist played the main role in the show's debut offering, but it did often feel like we were watching Hannah's story play out in a removed fashion. Yes, we saw every terrible thing that happened to her, how she recalled them and how Clay ultimately saw her, but it often felt as though her ghost, if you will, was just recounting them from beyond. And as the show relied heavily upon the unreliable narrator device, it's fair to say that we never got to really know Hannah.
This all became personified in the second season when Clay literally talked to a reserved, sombre ghostly iteration of the character as the narrative was busy adding new unnecessary subplots to her story, revealing that we never really knew the real Hannah after all.
The show was at its best when the focus was on Hannah, and it's a shame that the character wasn't given the exploration that she fully deserved, especially in the later seasons.
