13 Reasons Why Season 3 Review: 7 Ups & 5 Downs

4. The Emphasis On Redemption

13 Reasons Why Season 3
Netflix

Season 3 leans rather heavily on the theme of redemption, attempting to remind us that no one person can be defined only by the bad things they've done in life. While that is undoubtedly a divisive approach, as it's certainly the case in some aspects while not so much in others, it ends up lending itself to the narrative really well. Of course, the bad are bad but, as Alex reminds us, nobody's clean - not even the good guys.

There are a number of characters who end up having compelling redemption arcs throughout the season, as Tyler attempts to find his way back to happiness by overcoming his demons and yes, even Bryce attempts to atone for his sins.

However, one of the more pleasantly subtle tales of redemption comes from Clay who, following his out-of-order behaviour last season, has realised that it's not up to him to force abuse survivors to speak about what happened to them. That's the type of growth that not only redeems him as a person but solidifies him as a strong lead capable of development.

Though some of the redemption arcs may be questionable, many of them provide the season with some genuinely endearing moments (such as Tyler and Clay's friendship) that remind viewers of the importance of having true friends. And its moments like that which elevate the season and make it so much more than your typical teen murder mystery.
