If you've watched 13 Reasons Why from the very beginning, you'll probably understand why Zach Dempsey has become one of the most beloved characters on the show. A man determined to prove that he was so much more than a one-dimensional jock, he tried to make things right with Hannah Baker and helped Alex recover from his suicide attempt by vowing to be there for him whenever he needed him. That, ladies and gents, is development.

Unfortunately, Zach's character arc in the final season was a little harder to gauge because, in all honesty, it was a bit all over the place. Yes, the constant drinking and self-destructive attitude was certainly understandable given that he'd likely never play football again - and it never stopped him from being a friend to Alex - but it never felt like it was truly dealt with as the season progressed.

He spent much of the season doing the same thing and was still doing it as late as the penultimate episode before he seemingly attempted to get his life back on track after Justin's death (though it was more implied than outright confirmed).

The journey was fine, in theory, but the execution felt off. And as far as Zach's storylines go, he's had stronger seasons.
