Nnedi Okorafor's novel Who Fears Death won the 2011 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and has now been optioned for a TV series with great potential.

The book takes place in a post-apocalyptic future Sudan, where the light-skinned Nuru oppress the dark-skinned Okeke. It follows Onyesonwu, the child of an Okeke woman raped by a Nuru man, who possesses magical powers and goes on a quest to defeat her sorcerer father.

It's a promise that blends magical fantasy with serious racial and gender issues, and should make for a ripe drama series from HBO, with George R.R. Martin onboard to executive produce alongside former HBO President Michael Lombardo, with Selwyn Seyfu Hinds writing the series.
