In the wake of Tim Burton's 1989 blockbuster, Batman, and its sequel, Batman Returns, the Dark Knight was revolutionised for a generation. One result of this revolution was Batman: The Animated Series, beloved by fans and critics alike as the best animated superhero series ever.

The series ran between 1992 and 1995, with eighty-five episodes. As well as the other few DC animated shows of the 1990s, Batman: The Animated Series is a fan favourite for its comic-accurate portrayal of the title character's legacy and the casting of Kevin Conroy as the voice of the Caped Crusader.

Critics have also praised the series for its dark tone, visual style, and complex themes.

Often said to be one of the greatest animated shows of all time, alongside The Simpsons, makes it one of the best since the yellow family hit screens - and it remains one of the only programmes to be consistently cited by critics as being as good as The Simpsons.
