3. Once More, With Feeling (Season 6, Episode 7)

Prophecy Girl
Mutant Enemy

"We will walk through the fire, and let it burn."

One of the show's most daring and completely bonkers outings, Once More with Feeling is a musical extravaganza which sees Sunnydale cursed by a demon called Sweet (Hinton Battle) to sing their deepest secrets and admit their biggest fears. Oh, and occasionally someone dances so much that they burn to death.

With multiple epic numbers, including the ensemble piece "Walk Through the Fire," the ballad "Standing," and the rock song "Rest in Peace," things go from funny to deadly serious real quick.

Giles, Tara and Spike are particular standouts in the singing scenes, but the true power of the episode lies not in the songs (which are no doubt epic and endlessly quotable), but in the revelations the songs share.

Buffy is forced to admit she was in Heaven after she died, rather than the Hell her friends thought they'd saved her from, and Xander and Anya admit their uncertainties about their upcoming marriage. Also, Tara proclaims her love for Willow only to find out she was tampering with her memories, and Spike tells Buffy how much being around her hurts him.

All told, Once More with Feeling is Buffy at its funniest, its darkest and its most inventive, and it will forever be the ultimate fan favourite.
