15 Best How I Met Your Mother Episodes

8. Symphony Of Illumination (Season 7, Episode 12)

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

"There was one thing your Aunt Robin never was: she was never alone."

From season six onward, HIMYM began hitting audiences with more emotional episodes, and season seven's Symphony of Illumination is easily one of the show's most evocative and moving. It sees Robin take over narrating duties from Ted as she recounts the time she fell pregnant with her own kids.

The episode then sees her come to terms with the possibility of having children, despite the fact that she never wanted any. At the doctors, a major twist comes when it is revealed she can't even have children. It's then shown that Robin isn't talking to her future kids about their birth, but is sat on a park bench in the snow, trying to come to terms with the news.

The reveal is heartbreaking, but the episode reaches another level when Ted steps up and makes her a massive Christmas light display to cheer her up, despite not knowing what's being bothering her. It may be a sad episode, but it's very hopeful, promising fans that although Robin never became a mother, she did become very successful in her career and is happy with her life.
