15 Best New TV Characters Of The Decade
9. Kimmy Schmidt - The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
There’s been a few unstoppably positive female led sitcoms this decade, with Jess, Nick or even (an unrelated) Schmidt from New Girl all in contention here. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt though knocks New Girl out of the running, saving a difficult choice between the three main leads... sorry, Cece or Winston fans.
Kimmy Schmidt makes it impossible for you not to like her. You can not like the show, certainly. It’s overly camp, sugary sweet, trades on very safe humour and lacks the grit a lot of modern comedies have. Schmidt herself though is infectiously loveable.
Star Ellie Kemper’s role as Erin in The Office wasn’t too dissimilar; in fact, Keller hasn’t displayed a great deal of range across her whole career. When she’s this good at what she does though, why should she change?
All those reasons to not like The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are actually why people love it too. No, there’s no probing questions, gritty realism or the blend of tragedy that many modern sitcoms go for. It’s just very, very funny.
It’s sweet, clean humour, brilliantly carried by the unbridled positivity of Kemper’s Kimmy Schmidt. We could all use a friend like her in our lives.
