Episode: Chapter 64

Even against the current U.S. political backdrop, House of Cards fifth season managed to seem outlandish (in a good way). The shocks kept piling up as the new season got ever more bonkers, and while the season finale had some big moments, the true game-changer came in the 12th episode.

The latter half of the season really belonged to Robin Wright's Claire, who finally got her big moment in a political sense, but first got a big moment in a far more dramatic way.

We've seen Frank murder people, so up until this point Claire was the 'better' of the two. Not anymore. Knowing Tom could be a problem, she decides to wipe him out - by having sex with him, but poisoning him first. It means they're in the middle of it when the life starts to drain away from him, as we come to the horrifying realisation of what she's done.

It's a major shock in a season full of them, and one that reveals Claire too will do anything right now for power, a gloriously unnerving moment, with an added dash of dark humour thanks to the fact she leaves the dead body for Mark Usher to clean up.
