3. Mare Of Easttown
The crowning achievement of HBO's Mare of Easttown isn't the murder mystery at its centre or the expert worldbuilding that surrounds it, but what might just be Kate Winslet's greatest performance.
Winslet stars as haunted detective Mare Sheehan, who's put on the case of a recent murder, despite her previous murder investigation coming up short and causing some of the locals to lose faith in her abilities.
Whilst she's tries to solve the increasingly maddening case, Mare is also confronted with a series of difficult personal troubles, most notably her recent divorce, the loss of her son and disillusionment with her career.
Mare of Easttown is boosted to greatness by Winslet's strong but vulnerable performance, and the mystery around her often matches her intensity and complexities scene-for-scene. It's unrelenting, constantly twisting and methodically structured, and as it stands might just be one of the best miniseries in HBO's extensive back catalogue.
