Community isn't the same show after Troy leaves on the boat, but at least the study group bring him up after his departure. In fact, Troy comes up in conversation so frequently that newcomer Frankie, who never met him, asks what was so special about him. Jeff tells her that Troy was a gifted steel drum player, and Frankie takes note and heads off. Jeff explains to a confused study group that it'll pay off later.

Towards the end of the episode, when Elroy's ex-girlfriend's 90s band, Natalie is Freezing, play at the Greendale Dance, it pays off. Frankie joins Natalie is Freezing onstage, playing the steel drum surprisingly well. Jeff confirms that this is the payoff as the group laugh and cheer Frankie on. Her new talent appears again, in the episode Intro to Recycled Cinema, in Abed's film Chief Starr and the Raiders of the Galaxy.

The best part of the scene is the fact that Frankie's quest to learn steel drum is never mentioned until her performance. The scene became a brick joke, which Abed would very much appreciate.
