15 Greatest Doctor Who Cliffhangers Of All Time

4. The Caves of Androzani, Part Three

The Caves of Androzani is often lauded as the very best Doctor Who story ever made - and it certainly has a lot going for it. Peter Davison is at the top of his game, veteran Who scribe Robert Holmes delivers an exceptional script and it is all topped off with a brilliant regeneration. Another highlight of the story is this lead-in to its final episode. Dying from Spectrox Toxaemia, the Doctor has hijacked his enemy's spaceship so he can return to his friend Peri, trapped on the planet below, who is also near-death. With nothing to lose, the Doctor risks it all by steering the ship to crash-land on the planet's surface. This cliffhanger might not sound particularly terrific on paper but on screen it is brought to life vividly. As well as Davision's aforementioned performance. the scene is dynamically directed by Graeme Harper, making it not only a tense and exciting cliffhanger, but also one of the defining heroic moments of the Fifth Doctor. Not too shabby! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdLzNSV3bK4
