"What year is it?"

Twin Peaks: The Return baffled and beguiled viewers over the course of its 18-episodes, but ultimately it all came down - as it had to do - to Agent Dale Cooper and Laura Palmer (or rather, Richard and Carrie Paige).

Trying to make too much sense out of exactly what is happening here is something of a fool's errand, but the ambiguity does nothing to rob the moment of its shocking power. As Cooper, and the audience, tries to make sense of what's happening, we hear Laura's mother call out her name, which seems to jolt Carrie back to a sense of her former self and she lets out a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream, with the lights in the old Palmer house going out as a result.

As the screen fades to black and Angelo Badalamenti's Dark Space Low plays us out, we're left confounded, but also knowing that evil will never lose, Laura Palmer will never be free, and the good Dale Cooper will never stop fighting.
