15 Mind-Blowing Facts About Supergirl You Need To Know

The comic book history of the star of the hit new TV series is more bizarre than you might think!

Supergirl may have a very famous cousin in the form of a certain Man of Steel, but there's no denying that she's a great character in her own right. Regardless of whether or not you're familiar with her comic book history, Kara Zor-El is just as iconic as Superman, and also just so happens to now be the star of her very own hit TV series. Supergirl's DC Comics history is utterly fascinating however, with her very unusual creation and subsequent adventures guaranteeing that she stands out both from the various heroes who have donned that iconic "S" symbol on their chests over the years, and pretty much every other female superhero out there to boot. With 56 years worth of history behind her, Supergirl is a character older than even the likes of Spider-Man and Iron Man, making the aforementioned CBS TV show a long overdue chance to showcase what an awesome creation she is to a much wider audience. So, looking back over Supergirl's interesting and often bizarre time in the DC Universe, what facts stand out as the most mind-blowing? Here, you will find the fifteen most surprising and shocking revelations about Supergirl, offering some insight not only into the comic book version of the character, but also the ones to have graced the big screen (including 2013's Man of Steel).

15. She's Part Of The DC Extended Universe

Before the release of Man of Steel in 2013, a prequel comic book by Zack Snyder, David Goyer, and Geoff Johns was released. It revealed that Kara Zor-El definitely exists in this world, and while she was still the daughter of Zor-El and Alura, there was a huge twist. This Kara was born thousands of years before baby Kal-El was sent to Earth from the dying Krypton and was actually part of the planet's Explorer Guild, the group sent out in scout ships to terraform other planets. However, Kara's mission went horribly wrong when her ship crash landed in the frozen tundra of Earth; that same ship would later be discovered by Superman in Man of Steel and become his Fortress of Solitude. The comic strongly hinted that Kara wasn't killed by the Kryptonian responsible for sabotaging her ship after the two engaged in an epic battle, but her fate still remains unknown. An opened escape pod spotted in that ship in the movie has led many to believe she's somewhere out there; has this Supergirl been living on Earth for thousands of years? Is she in some sort of suspended animation waiting to be woken up? For now, that remains to be seen, but one popular fan theory is that Kara was the first Amazon, thereby making Wonder Woman a Kryptonian descendant.
