4. She Was Wiped From DC Comics History After Saving The Universe

Supergirl is among the many heroes who have died at some point in the DC Universe, though her demise was relatively more permanent than most after she vanished from comic books for over 14 years. Despite being one of their most popular characters, DC Comics decided that Supergirl wasn't a strong enough creation to hold her own series and wanted to go back to Superman being the lone survivor from Krypton in order to further emphasise the isolation he feels on Earth. As a result, the decision to kill off Supergirl in the game changing Crisis on Infinity Earths was made back in 1985. In the battle against the Anti-Monitor, Supergirl saving her cousin managed to turn the tide of the fight against this incredibly powerful villain, giving her life in the process (Barry Allen also sacrificed himself, leading to Wally West to becoming The Flash). This reboot thereby wiped the character from the new timeline much to the horror of some comic book fans. This shocking conclusion was a big deal at the time though, and the above image of Superman cradling the dead Supergirl's body has become iconic in the years which have followed.
