15 Mind-Blowing Facts About Supergirl You Need To Know
3. She Was Created By Otto Binder And Al Plastino
Chances are that the names above don't ring a bell, but they should. Supergirl was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino back in 1959, and was considered a major addition to Superman canon at the time. Binder started writing for DC Comics in 1948 (he'd previously worked at Timely Comics - which would later become known as Marvel - among others), and Supergirl was just one of the fairly significant female heroes brought to life by the writer around this time. Those include Mary Marvel, Miss America, and Gimmick Girl. However, his work beyond Supergirl also had a major impact for the future of the DC Universe. Before coming up with Supergirl. he and Plastino created the Legion of Superheroes, a group of teens from the future who were inspired by the actions of Superman as a youngster. Rumour has it that those characters will star in their own movie at some point in the near future. Supergirl eventually joined that team, but another even more significant creation from these two was Brainiac. That classic Superman villain has obviously played a massive role in the Man of Steel's adventures in the decades which have followed, and he's strongly believed to be the big bad of the first Justice League movie, making the work of these two just as significant as far more recognisable names.
