15 Most Disturbing Black Mirror Moments
12. Daly’s DNA Collection
Robert Daly is the all-heroic Captain of the USS Callister. Except that he's not. He is in fact a disgruntled computer programmer who is at odds with, and unappreciated by, his numerous work colleagues.
His excessive Space Fleet fantasising is his only true form of escapism, and it's an unsavory one at that. Aboard the Callister are digital facsimiles of his real life work colleagues, who Daly controls, manipulates, intimidates and even dresses up. It's animal cruelty in a sci-fi setting. Their suffering at his hands eventually drives them to secretly spark their own mutiny, and ultimately surf the uncharted territories of the internet in an ongoing bid for freedom.
But the most disturbing aspect of this episode is the revealing of Daly's DNA-extrapolating methods, as he appears to have a fridge full of sneaky trinkets taken from his colleagues in the real world, the latest of which is a coffee cup. It takes obsessiveness into the darker realms, and highlights just how far off the deep this guy is both in real life, and in the virtual one he's created.
