15 Most Disturbing Black Mirror Moments
13. Death To...
Hated in the Nation was a clever play on viewers' expectations. Who was the real villain of the piece? Was it the despised public figures of high political standing? Or was it the numerous, and highly venomous, haters of those same people?
Main protagonist Karin Parke gains a fair indication after investigating the death of one such figurehead. During the case, she learns of the Autonomous Drone Insects: specially built killing machines, keyhole-sized, and an instant death sentence for anyone targeted by them.
It turns out there are more than a few thousand of these drones waiting to strike, and their target isn't the highbrow politicians, but the multitudinous members of the public responsible for their victimisation. They troll from a seemingly safe position, but due to the ADIs, there is no longer anything safe about it.
What transpires is revenge on an epic scale.
This isn't the case of just one or two victims, but the eventual death of 380,000-plus people. You don't see it, but you know it happened and bare witness to the aftermath, and that's quite enough. It's the highest body-count of any singular Black Mirror event, and it is traumatising.
