The Show: A sitcom revolving around quirky teacher Jess (Zooey Deschanel) as she moves into a new pad with three guys, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). Shenanigans ensue. Why It's Overrated: Deschanel is certainly an appealing lead, but this is a show which quickly wears down its goodwill simply because it's trying far, far too hard to be awkward and different, but it actually causes Jess to be pretty damn annoying unless you have a preternatural tolerance for self-consciousness. Simply, the character isn't as charming as either the writers or Deschanel thinks she is, though some of the supporting cast members (especially Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield) do try their hardest to offset the quirk factor a tad. Also, the main romantic arc just feels like a poor man's Ross and Rachel. A watchable sitcom for sure, but one that benefits from being watched in small doses, because a marathon would just burn all but the most devout fans out. With dwindling ratings (despite a savagely loyal fanbase), if it gets renewed for a fifth season, it'll probably be the last.
