The Show: Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is back for this 12-episode mini-series, taking place four years after the eighth season, where Bauer is living in exile in London as a new terrorist threat emerges. Why It's Overrated: To be fair, 24 started to go down the toilet after its brilliant fifth season, with six being an utter trainwreck and seven and eight being heavily mixed. Despite the interesting new location and the return of numerous iconic characters, the plot is just the same old generic 24 nonsense, which felt tired a while ago and isn't given any strong reinvention here. Sutherland still kicks a** as Bauer and there's a particularly great part for William Devane as President James Heller, but there's nothing here that really suggested another season needed to happen, especially as it didn't give Jack any sort of closure whatsoever. Nevertheless, the mini-series was widely acclaimed by critics and many fans, who it seems find a certain level of comfort in the show's formulaic content. It's understandable, yet at the same time, if Bauer comes back for yet another run, the rote plot lines and stock characters need to be done away with.
