6. Angel Loses His Soul
Angel was Buffy’s first love, and their relationship forms the backbone of the show for its first three seasons, before Angel leaves for LA (and his own show) at the end of season three.
During Season Two, just as the pair become a real item, they share a night of passion and confess their love for one another. It’s a sweet and tender moment, which is quickly thrown aside when Angel loses his soul.
Having experienced a moment of true happiness, Angel’s curse kicks in and his soul leaves his body, turning him into his soulless alter ego, Angelus.
Watching him go from loved up to viciously taunting Buffy for her feelings is tough to watch, as is seeing him team up with Spike and Drusilla to kill her and her friends. Though it’s quite possibly the show’s most iconic storylines, it is a timeless moment of tragedy and a brutal, shocking twist.
