4. Dawn's Introduction
This one might not seem that shocking now, especially when compared to some other entries on the list, but there’s no denying that the first time you see Dawn is a peculiar and confusing event.
During the season five opener, Buffy fights Dracula, Xander is brainwashed, and Giles is seduced by the Three Sisters, but the most bizarre and jarring moment of the episode is Dawn’s introduction as Buffy’s sister.
To make it weirder, no one seems to think it’s odd, and save for some very obscure references in later episodes, fans are left to wonder just what the hell’s going on until Buffy learns the truth of her existence from a dying monk.
Dawn’s a solid addition to the show, giving Buffy a relationship that isn’t romantic and adding a great level of mystery to the show, but it’s fair to say that her entrance to the show is a shocking revelation on first viewing.
