Like Perversions of Science, the nineties revival of sixties Twilight Zone knock off The Outer Limits owed a lot to HBO's ghoul-hosted mega hit Tales from the Crypt.

Unlike Perversions of Science, however, this underrated anthology opted to play down the cheesiness of anthology shows, instead darkening the tone and going for the jugular.

Don't let the limitations of network nineties television fool you. The Outer Limits used its self-contained storytelling format to pull off stories far too bleak and uncompromising for The Twilight Zone, providing an uncredited blueprint for Charlie Brooker's more critically acclaimed Black Mirror with its penchant for unapologetic satire and viciously cruel twist endings.
