15 New Upcoming HBO Series To Be Excited About
2. The Deuce
David Simon is a man who could turn the subject of gardening into a deep character study full of complex individuals and a blurred line of right and wrong, so any show from him is one to look out for, especially when it has an actually interesting subject matter and a great cast to go with it.
For The Wire creator's next series with HBO he'll be looking at the legalisation and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York City, starting in the 1970s and moving into the '80s. Alongside the industry it'll explore the rise of HIV, the violence of the drug epidemic, and the real estate boom that came with the change. In short, the sort of material that Simon can really sink his teeth into, and make something truly gripping out of.
The cast is led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, playing a sex worker, and James Franco, who is playing a set of twins who become fronts for the mob, and also include Wire alum Lawrence Gilliard Jr. Simon has created the show with longtime collaborator George Pelecanos, while Michelle McLaren is directing at least the pilot.
