Who doesn't appreciate getting a little emotional every now and again? In TV, there's always going to be a moment or two when you can't deal with what's playing out in front of you.

Whether it's a comedy or a drama, a scene (or an entire episode) can come out of nowhere and knock the breath out of your lungs and cause your eyes to fill with water.

Character deaths, shock revelations, heartbreaking speeches and just plain cruel twists are all perfect for inducing some tears. Be these moments in silly sit-coms where the sad moment comes out of the blue, or a gripping drama which promises big emotional moments but manages to shock and depress all the same.

This emotional weight is needed in almost all shows, in order to bring growth to characters, raise the stakes of the plot or fill in narrative gaps. Sometimes, they're needed to give closure to real-life tragedy, and other times they're there seemingly to break the audience in two.

The following list will take the plunge into the saddest moments in TV history, from the rightful classics to the moments you arguably pushed from your memory.

15. Game Of Thrones - I Wish I Was The Monster You Think I Am

There are plenty of moments throughout Game of Thrones' eight season run that could have made this list, from the death of Khal Drogo, the story of Jaime Lannister, the execution of Ned Stark and nearly every main character death in between.

But when it comes to heartbreak, who better to turn to than everyone's favourite, Tyrion Lannister?

Tyrion arguably went through more than any other character on the show. Sure, a lot of it he brought on himself, but there's no denying that he had a pretty hard time.

The true turning point in his character arc came after the death of his nephew, Joffrey Baratheon. Accused of murder, Tyrion was put on trial and was forced to witness as his family and former allies turned on him. The tragic moment comes when Shae, his lover, comes forward as one of Cersei Lannister's witnesses, telling the court that she heard Tyrion and Sansa Stark plotting the murder.

The look of sadness on Tyrion's face as he is betrayed is enough to make you cry, but once he realises his fate has been sealed, he lets loose a torrent of suppressed rage toward the court and his family. It's a powerful, tragic and seething speech, and Peter Dinklage owns the screen as he explodes his way through it.

With Tyrion, it really does break your heart to see the innocent so beaten down.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Be excellent to each other.
