15 Saddest TV Show Moments Of All Time

12. Stranger Things - Hopper's Letter

Hopper's sacrifice at the end of Stranger Things' third season remains one of the show's best and most effective moments. Having finally gotten the better of season villain Grigori, Hopper looks over at Joyce with a look of sadness and knowing. He is then seemingly killed in an explosion, as the many characters elsewhere rejoice at having defeated the Mind Flayer.

This alone marks a seriously sad part of the show, but it's not the saddest. That teary-eyed honour goes to the letter that Hopper leaves adopted daughter Eleven. As David Harbour lends his voice to reading the letter, the Byers Family pack up their things and prepare to leave town, whilst the rest of the group bid their farewells.

The shot then cuts to Eleven finishing up the letter, and as she reads she finds herself breaking down. Hammering home the fact that Hopper is really gone, it's a devastating scene which ends on a funny but wrenching line: "For the sake of your poor old Dad, keep the door open three inches." A callback to one of the funniest parts of the season suddenly takes on a whole new meaning, and it's really tough to watch.

Of course, the season four trailer has already shown that Hopper is alive, but on re-watches this moment won't be any less effective.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
