There are so many gut-wrenching moments on The Walking Dead, from the deaths of Shane, Dale, Glenn, Abraham, Beth, Tyreese and Sasha (to name but a few), from the pike scene at the end of Season Nine to Rick Grimes' farewell episode, but when it comes to the show at it's most depressing, you need look no further than the demise of Merle Dixon.

After heading off on a suicide mission to take on The Governor's men near the end of season three, Merle finds himself outnumbered and eventually shot dead by his old boss.

This is sad in itself, but the whole situation reaches its peak when Daryl comes running, looking for his brother. As he tracks Merle, he cuts down Walkers until eventually he comes across one that causes him to pause: it's Merle, dead and turned.

Daryl's breakdown has become something of a meme since it happened, but there's no denying the true emotion of the scene. As Merle moves on him, Daryl begins to cry and then brings himself to kill Merle with his knife, stabbing him repeatedly as he lets out all of his rage and conflicted feelings about his brother. The look on Daryl's face once the deed is done is reason enough to make you weep.
