The Simpsons' power lies in its ability to balance often surreal and silly comedy with heartfelt messages about family relationships. The Season Six episode "And Maggie Makes Three" is a prime example of just how effective this narrative formula could be.

After looking through some photo albums, Lisa notices that they don't have any pictures of Maggie, which prompts Homer to tell the story of Maggie's birth. In it, Homer tells of how unhappy he was working at the Power Plant and how he longed to work at the Bowling Alley, but when he eventually gets his dream job he learns Marge is pregnant and that he needs his old, better paying job back.

Mr Burns makes Homer beg for his old job, and places a plaque in front of his desk which reads: "Don't forget, you're here forever." The end of the episode then shows the audience that all of Maggie's baby pictures at his work, covering the plaque to make it read: "Do it for her."
