15 Star Trek Deaths That Didn't Last
2. Miles O'Brien - Visionary
How many times do you need to kill someone?
Miles Edward O'Brien is DS9's continual whipping boy. If something tragic needs to happen and someone has to suffer then the station's Chief of Operations has a ticket for the front of the queue.
Season three's Visionary takes that even further with the Chief skipping forward in time and seeing future events. Each time, Miles is able to skip back and change the course of the future, however it leads to another path where he ends up dead due to a concealed weapon in one of the station's corridors.
A further trip into the future reveals O'Brien has died due to the radiation buildup of the time-shifting, the next shows the station destroyed by an unknown force. Gradually building up a picture of events, the final jump reveals Romulan involvement and that a Warbird has been circling the station and is partially responsible for the timeshifting.
However, this "original" O'Brien is now too heavily irradiated and switches places with his "future" counterpart who returns to warn DS9 and avoid the Romulan attack. The audience can only assume that the first O'Brien is therefore killed in that alternate timeline while the "future" O'Brien takes his place.
