Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. Despite a controversial finish, Game of Thrones ended its run at the very height of its popularity as one of the biggest shows of all time. Numerous networks have tried to replicate the success of the fantasy giant but none have come close.

Netflix tried (and failed) with The Witcher and Amazon is putting together an astonishingly expensive season of television set in the Lord of the Rings universe, but for now Thrones remains the king of fantasy television.

The politics of the warring noble families of Westeros with the impending magical threats to the Seven Kingdoms from both the north and the east have captured the attention of millions of fans and there has never been anything like it before.

Production levels across the board are flawless with fantastic performances, sets, writing, CGI and everything in between. Taking George R.R. Martin's dense and supposedly 'unadaptable' books and making them into a television juggernaut is no small feat and speaks to the kind of once in a lifetime show that Game of Thrones was.

Whether Amazon can do the same thing with their coming Lord of the Rings project, or if HBO can catch lightning in a bottle twice with their Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, remains to be seen. Either way, at present Game of Thrones is the best fantasy show of all time.
