15 TV Shows That Are The Current Best Of Every Genre
5. Crime: Ozark
A year ago, Ozark would not have made this list. If you could win a prize for most improved show, Ozark would win without much discussion. Crime is one of the most visited genres in television and with shows like The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad all fighting for position as three of the greatest shows of all time, they all happen to fall into the crime genre as well.
More recently, Peaky Blinders, Narcos, and Breaking Bad's spinoff Better Call Saul have all impressed with their own criminal narratives taking centre stage. Ozark's first season was fine, it was entertaining but nothing too special, Season Two was a massive step in the right direction but was bogged down by some weak characters and then there was Season Three.
Ozark's third season is a masterclass in character driven drama and heightened tension as the Byrde family struggle to appease their various masters and enemies. The money laundering drama features fantastic work from Laura Linney, Jason Bateman and the whole cast as every episode feels like the family are nearing closer and closer to ruin and death.
With one final extended season expected to wrap up the story, history dictates that Ozark will continue to improve as the show learned what was and wasn't working in its early seasons to now become one of the best dramas being put out on Netflix.
If you can get through the mediocre first season, you won't be sorry.
