One of the most intriguing parts of the Season 2 finale was a moment when Sayid, Sun and Jin run into the remnants of a statue with only four toes. For years, fans wondered about the mystery of the four toed statue, but they wouldn't see much of it again until later in the series. So who built it? What's it a statue of? And why is the foot the only part left?

The Explanation: What's known for sure is that the statue is of Taweret, the ancient Egyptian goddess of fertility and childbirth. The Lost Encyclopedia confirms this and says it was built by the island's ancient Egyptian inhabitants. In a Season 6 flashback, it's revealed that the Black Rock shattered most of the statue after being swept up in a huge wave.

It's likely that the statue was built by the Egyptians to ward off those who might want to come to the island, probably because they knew the importance of protecting the source. Why Taweret in particular? Well, she is the Goddess fertility, which ties into the wider issue of troubled childbirth.
