How do you possibly replace Game of Thrones? Why, with more Game of Thrones, of course!

A spin-off of HBO's biggest ever show long seemed inevitable, and they announced last year that five different pilot scripts from a range of writers were in development, before revealing a few months ago the one they've chosen to move forward with.

It comes from Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and George R.R. Martin himself, and will take place around 10,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Starting with the Age of Heroes and showing the descent into the Long Night, it promises to be a very different take on Westeros, and will show that "from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Goldman's a great writer, and mixing her talents with Martin's (limited) involvement should be a recipe for success, even with the overwhelming pressure that'll undoubtedly accompany the series.
