8. UP — Requiem For Adreek
There was room for one last bit of bird word play (Jankom's puns about the flightless Aurelian were rather good, after all). "That feathered fool," says Chakotay as he mourns over the skeletal remains of his former first officer towards the end of Last Flight of the Protostar, Part I, played wondrously by Robert Beltran in quavering voice, and accompanied by the delicate notes of the piano. Bolian or otherwise, our collective hearts break. "You did it, Adreek," Chakotay cries out, as the light, and the hope, of antimatter, fills the cavern.
What happened next is surely a send-off to rival them all: Adreek is laid to rest across the clouds of vapour, as Chakotay, the kids, and hologram Janeway look on. For a character we knew very little about, a few lines, and indeed no dialogue at all as he departs, told us everything we needed to know. In death, Adreek had given the rest a chance at life.
