13. Timothy Spall - Machine Operative
Before he was Wormtail in Harry Potter or playing Turner in the film of the same name, Timothy Spall had a role in Red Dwarf. He played the machine operative in Back to Reality.
Insulting towards the crew of the Dwarf, it was a short cameo but memorable. He gave no quarter and his abrupt style combined with a Brummie accent gave a lot of depth to what could have been a shallow character. This is no more apparent than the juxtaposition of his grounded appearance and his intricate knowledge of the game and associated intelligence.
Without a doubt a brilliant, understated cameo even if it gets overshadowed by Dwayne Dibley (the Cat’s alter-ego in this episode).
