17 Visually Stunning TV Opening Credits

2. Game of Thrones

True Detective
HBO

The only opening credits with two Emmy wins, Game of Thrones’ opening credits is another visual masterpiece by Elastic which details the expansive world of Westeros. Each episode’s locations are crisply animated as fluid automatons spiralling and locking into place.

Originally, showrunners Benioff and Weiss wanted Game of Thrones to open with a crow flying from King’s Landing to Winterfell, passing key areas along the way. The idea falls apart, however, when realising that much of the action (particularly Jon Snow’s and Danaeys Targareon’s stories) lie outside that zone.

What we have instead is an ingenious and mesmerising set-up. To new watchers, Westeros is a daunting world filled with different factions, Houses, castles and keeps. The world-map helps orientate the viewer, while the bands around the small sun detail significant plot points.
