It’s moody, seductive, and haunting, while perfectly capturing the themes of religion, pessimism, and sexual perversion. While season two and three’s openings are respectably well put together, season one’s visualisation of Louisiana.

Tortured characters and desolate set-pieces intersect with each other. Rusty is haunted by his past, while Hart’s adulterous thoughts loom in the back of his mind. Every shot, like Woody Harrelson’s gaunt face being morphed into tendons by a motorway junction, send shivers down the spine.

The whole montage oozes existentialism in the Deep South. No wonder you can find a True Detective-style opening credits for almost every popular entertainment under the sun.
