19 Things That Almost Completely Changed Game Of Thrones

12. Tyrion Would Have Aligned With The Starks

In the finished version, Tyrion's dealings with the Starks was somewhat limited, but he was initially intended to be a much closer ally. Having worked closely with his brother Jaime to battle Robb Stark and burn down Winterfell, Tyrion would have been betrayed by his scheming brother and blamed for the murder of all of the surviving heirs that put Jaime on the throne. As a result, Tyrion would have switched sides, aligning with the Starks against his own malevolent family. Was It A Good Change? Having the Starks spread out entirely is one of Martin's most genius creative decisions, and Tyrion would have been too powerful a player in the game of thrones for that to ever really happen in the original book outline. It is far better to see Tyrion working with Daenerys - under Lord Varys' guidance - as you get the sense that the entire series will culminate in the gigantic set-piece that pits her forces against King's Landing; a far fairer fight than if the remaining Starks stood up to the Lannisters.
